As we look back on the chaotic events of 2020 here are a few of the more positive takeaways and trends that we saw in our world. Let’s hope next year we can find plenty more.
1. Everybody’s best friend
Pet Adoptions Have Increased Dramatically – with our lives being more simple and nearer to home we have seen an increase of over 50% when compared to last year in the UK of dogs and cats finding their forever homes.
2. Swiping the blues away
TikTok blew up and our boredom was best cured on a daily basis by people like Charli D’Amelio, a US dancer and social media personality with a whopping 100.2m followers. Whilst, brands like Pepsi encouraged TikTokers to unapologetically do what “They enjoy” even if others would be judged by tagging #ThatsWhatILike. Cue wearing a ball gown to take out your rubbish bin!
3. What’s in a name – Aldi vs Brewdog
Their respective design teams spent a week seemingly ripping off each others’ branding, and entertaining Twitter users in the process. The outcome saw the two brands teaming up to launch a limited edition IPA sold exclusively at Aldi stores.
4. About time too
At the 42nd Academy Awards, Parasite 2019, a film from Bong Joon-ho which examines social classes and their complex layers, was the first non-English language film to win best picture.
5. Not travelling has its benefits
NASA researchers have found that since February, global restrictions have reduced nitrogen dioxide concentrations by nearly 20%.
6. Our kinda gal
A 103-year-old grandma named Jennie Stejna beat COVID-19 and celebrated with a Bud Light. (Sorry I know we said no mention but we couldn’t resist celebrating her Go Jennie!)
7. Time to Hail Mary
NASA named its Washington, D.C. headquarters after Mary W. Jackson, its first black female engineer.
8. Living la vida local
We rediscovered our love for local, found our favourite takeaways and were incredibly impressed with the Love Local campaign from Time Out which helps you discover the London based craftspeople local to you who offer everything from handmade knives to home made sparkling wine.
9. More than just a like
Facebook Dating now has a Secret Crush feature that lets you choose which friends you secretly fancy.
10. Because you’re worth it
Luxury brands have now realised we all like to shop from our sofas or a beach in the middle east. Harrods even set up three studios and made its personal shopping service virtual! So, if you don’t know what gift to get yourself or that someone special this season then they are on hand to help.
